His trauma from Vietnam may explain why he reacted, or it may not, but it does not justify or excuse putting his hands on another person. No one is legally required to stand for the national anthem, and no one has the right to force someone else to do so. The old man was 100% in the wrong, regardless of whether he had trauma or was just being an ass!
