This is the moment a scaffolder almost lost his life when he stepped on a skylight and plummeted more than six meters onto a concrete floor below. James Cranswick was installing temporary scaffolding edge protection at a warehouse in Keighley, West Yorkshire, when the accident happened. Newly released CCTV footage shows the 26-year-old falling through the roof and striking a pallet truck before hitting the floor as workers rush to his aid. The skylight was “almost invisible” to scaffolder as he unknowingly moved around the roof, unaware of the hidden safety hazard which resulted in him breaking his arm, leg, and suffering head injuries. Two construction companies were fined £79,300 at Leeds Magistrates Court on 4 June over the incident. Health and Safety Inspector Shauna Halstead said Mr Cranswick is “lucky to be alive” after the which she said was “wholly avoidable”. “The risks associated with work on, or around fragile surfaces are well-known, and HSE guidance is available to assist companies in complying with the law. “Everyone working in construction should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take enforcement action where roof work is not properly managed, as workers should not be needlessly put in harm’s way.”
