Royce Clayton testified Friday about conversations he had with Scott Erickson that he said were aimed at encouraging Erickson to take accountability for his role in his girlfriend killing two boys while speeding in her SUV. The retired professional baseball player said the calls listed on Erickson's phone records "was me asking Scott to take some type of accountability by making sure that whatever happened, the parents would understand it. Not understand what happened, but understand his involvement. And yeah, just overarching, have some type of accountability." Clayton took the stand Friday in a wrongful death lawsuit trial against Erickson, Rebecca Grossman and Grossman's husband, filed by the parents of Mark and Jacob Iskander. "Now, I'm not saying I'm here to judge ... of whatever somebody is supposed to do ethically, but I think those contributing factors is the reason why Scott and I don't talk," Clayton said. He and Erickson competed against each other in Major League Baseball and had been friends for 30 years when Grossman crashed into the boys on Sept. 29, 2020. Clayton did not witness the crash but drank alcohol with Grossman and Erickson at a restaurant in Westlake Village, California, shortly before the crash. He testified Friday about his decision to tell police that Erickson was driving another SUV witnesses said was racing Grossman's SUV. @Meghann Cuniff The Iskanders' lawyer Brian Panish asked Clayton if he felt Erickson going to police "was the right thing to do." "Royce Clayton felt that that was the right thing to do," Clayton said. "Right. Whether it was someone that you knew for 30 years or someone that you just met in your — Royce Clayton's — mind, the right thing to do was to tell the authorities?" Panish asked. "The right thing to do would have been to stop," Clayton said. You can watch Clayton testify in cross-exam that Erickson told him he and Grossman were "f***ing flying down the street" here @Meghann Cuniff.
