Jimin had been deaf since birth. She couldn't hear the sound of waves, the rustling of leaves, or Minjeong calling her name from across a room. She was also nonverbal, so she communicated through sign language and the notes app on her phone. Minjeong had never treated her differently. Their little dog, Ponyo, however, had never bothered learning. The three of them were spending their vacation in a quiet seaside province, staying in a small cottage surrounded by trees. There was a lake nearby, a beach a short walk away, and barely anyone around. It was peaceful. That afternoon, Jimin was in the kitchen preparing lunch while Minjeong took Ponyo outside. A few minutes later, Ponyo came running back alone. Jimin glanced toward the door. No Minjeong. She assumed she was somewhere nearby and continued preparing the food. Then Jimin saw Ponyo started barking. The dog ran toward the lake. Jimin followed, wiping her hands on a towel. She looked around the shore. Nothing. She couldn't hear Minjeong calling her name, so she simply scanned the area. Ponyo kept barking at the water. Jimin stared at the lake. Maybe Minjeong had gone swimming. She waited. A few minutes passed. Then a few more. Her smile slowly disappeared. Minjeong's slippers were still outside the cottage. Her phone was still on the table. Jimin's stomach dropped. She looked at the lake again. What if she had fallen in? What if she was drowning? She didn't think. Jimin immediately jumped into the water. The cold shocked her, but she kept swimming. She searched beneath the surface, desperately looking for Minjeong. Nothing. She surfaced. Her eyes darted around the lake. Still nothing. She dove again. Nothing. Again. Still nothing. Panic began taking over. She needed help. Anyone. But there was no one nearby. And even if there was, Jimin couldn't call for them. She couldn't scream. She couldn't hear anyone shouting back. She couldn't tell where a voice might be coming from. For the first time, her deafness didn't feel like something she had simply learned to live with. It felt terrifying. She surfaced again, gasping, tears mixing with the water on her face. She looked around helplessly. Then— Someone touched her shoulder. Jimin nearly jumped out of the water. She spun around. Minjeong. Completely dry. Holding a plastic bag. Jimin froze. Minjeong stared at her, confused. She immediately began signing. ‘What are you doing?!’ Jimin didn't answer. She simply swam toward her and wrapped her arms around her. Minjeong's expression immediately changed. “Jimin?” Jimin held onto her tightly. Minjeong dropped the bag into the shallow water and hugged her back. “What happened?” Jimin finally pulled away. Her hands were shaking as she signed. ‘I couldn't find you.’ Minjeong's face softened. Jimin continued. ‘Ponyo was barking at the lake. I thought you were here.’ Her hands moved faster. ‘I waited. You didn't come back. I thought you were drowning.’ Jimin looked down. Then she signed slowly. ‘I couldn't ask anyone for help.’ Her hands trembled. ‘I couldn't call you. I couldn't hear anything. I didn't know where you were.’ Minjeong immediately pulled her back into a hug. “Oh, Jimin…” Jimin buried her face against her shoulder. Minjeong gently rubbed her back before pulling away and signing. She pointed toward the cottage. ‘I went to the car.’ Then she lifted the plastic bag. Minjeong gave her an apologetic smile. ‘I thought you were still cooking.’ Jimin's expression went completely blank. Then— She pushed Minjeong's shoulder. Minjeong stumbled back. “Okay, okay!” Jimin angrily signed. ‘YOU LEFT WITHOUT TELLING ME?!’ “I know!” ‘I DIVED INTO A LAKE FOR YOU!’ Minjeong immediately stopped smiling. “Sorry.” Jimin splashed water at her. “Hey!” Another splash. “Jimin!” Another. “Okay! I'm really sorry!” Ponyo barked from the shore. Both of them turned toward their dog. (continued in comments) — #winrina #winrinaau #au #fyp #jmj
