Walter Plecker ran Virginia's vital records office from 1912 to 1946 and pushed the 1924 Racial Integrity Act, which used a strict "one-drop rule." Because many Virginia tribal members (like the Pamunkey and Chickahominy) also had some Black ancestry from centuries of intermarriage, Plecker refused to count them as truly Native and relabeled them "colored" on official records — erasing their Indian identity on paper, which later made it much harder for these tribes to get official recognition. Some people take this true story and stretch it much further, claiming it proves all African Americans are really the original Indigenous people of America, just mislabeled as "Black." That bigger claim isn't accurate: Plecker was targeting specific tribes with mixed ancestry, not Black Americans as a whole, and the historical and genetic evidence shows most African Americans descend mainly from West and Central Africa, with some European ancestry added through slavery and, in some families, some Native ancestry too — but that doesn't make the whole group "indigenous" to the continent. The real history of what Plecker did to Native tribes is well documented and serious, but the idea that it secretly proves all Black Americans are Native American isn't supported by the facts.
