Honestly if a child is choosing estrangement they’ve already been abandoned

the issue isn't estrangement... it's that parents weren't the ones who chose it

My loser boomer mom kicked me out at 18. (She was an alcoholic and drank herself to death this year.) ANYWAY not once after kicking me out did she ever check in to make sure I had enough food or that I was doing okay while I was trying to figure out adulthood completely on my own. So yeah, going no contact with her was pretty much the inevitable outcome. She used to tell me having kids ruined her life, and now I’m the one who gets to spend the rest of my life dealing with the CPTSD she left me with.

My parents would kick me out in high school when I wasn't obeying. 🙃

Also, it was easy and normal for children to go low contact in the past by just moving away. My dad moved from France. Before the internet he’d call a few times a year and visit every few years. No one thought this was unusual.

Have you seen/heard what the parents of Queer kids do? We’re raised in overtly hateful “homes”. Let’s start this conversation with how “parents” treat their Queer kids. If they allow us to stay in the home at all. My brother was kicked out at age 18 if my parents could have kicked him out earlier and not gotten in trouble they would have done that.

My parents hated being parents and couldn’t wait for us all to get out. The first few years my mom would call but they made it clear it was our responsibility to “come home” for visits, holidays etc and never theirs. My dad has never actually called me. They don’t see their grandchildren or great grandchildren much. When I call to talk to my mom she can’t get off the phone fast enough and my dad only talks about himself. He never ever asks about my life at all. It’s not animosity or expectations not met. It’s apathy

The only reason this entirely common place life experience is viewed as a "trend" now is because the internet allows people to commiserate with each other about their shared experience and it also allows others to be witness to it. Back then this was not information normally offered up frequently or shared widely.

These are such good points. In addition, how many fathers just walk away from their children when they don’t want to be parents?

in the years before I cut my mom off, she barely called me, wouldn’t make plans, and then would become angry if I didn’t chase her. When I had my first baby she became invasive, demanding, and abusive if I didn’t give her exactly what she wanted in terms of time and access even though I was dealing with severe postpartum complications. So I set boundaries and she got worse and more abusive. I cut contact when her abuse made me suicidal. She truthfully estranged first, for years when she couldn’t be bothered to make an effort for the relationship.

This makes sense why boomers are so thrown by their adult kids cutting them off. It’s not supposed to be that way. I no longer speak to my dad. I came to the realization he never stopped speaking to his father even though he was abusive to myself and my sisters. Im pretty sure he expects the same “respect” from me. I need to put all my feelings and boundaries aside to be a “good” child.

Also all kids had to do back then was “move away for work”. A few phone calls home from a landline a month gave them freedom

My mom kicked me out multiple times when I was 17 and kicked me out for the last time when I was 18. Haven't talked to her in almost 15 years. 🤷🏻‍♀️Don't miss her either.

Sending those daughters off… many knew it was an adult family member that impregnated her and they chose him over the child.

My father is a big fan of silent treatments and when I felt old enough and comfortable enough to express how a lot of his parenting was abusive he stopped talking to me for months. When I finally got him on the phone he told me I misremembered my entire childhood and should believe what he told me, not what I remembered, so I blocked him. His silent treatment showed me what kind of peace I could have.

It’s always shocking to me that this is seen as “new” because my dad (older Gen X) has been estranged from his mom my entire life. And at some point, his siblings, too.
