@matt.gabz.gabato: We can clearly see how much vinegar comes out of the crown-of-thorns starfish because the vinegar has been mixed with food coloring.#SaveOurCorals #COTSControl #MarineConservation #OceanAwareness #advocacy

It’s a invasive species and they destroy coral reefs which in turn kills other fish.

Divers inject vinegar (or sometimes ox bile or a chemical called TCBS/sodium bisulfate) into crown-of-thorns starfish to kill them as part of coral reef management. Cutting them up backfires. Starfish have amazing regenerative abilities. If you slice one in half, each piece can often regrow into a whole new starfish instead of dying. Vinegar (acetic acid) causes internal damage that kills the starfish without needing to remove it from the reef or cut it into pieces. A single injection, usually into the central disc, is enough to kill it within a day or two, and it decomposes in place. A single injection is species-specific and doesn’t blast surrounding coral or fish with poison the way broader treatments might. Crown-of-thorns starfish pose two kinds of danger one to reefs, one to people.

Isn't there a way to kill them quickly? This seems like it is causing suffering.

I often wonder about invasive species, the earth is constantly attempting to shift and change and create equilibrium, yet we spend so much time and energy and money trying to manage the unmanageable. It’s interesting to me.
