@nxoteric: The Ushiku Daibutsu in Japan is a 120 metre bronze statue of Amitabha Buddha, once the tallest statue in the world, and every year around the autumn equinox it gets a proper clean as part of a Japanese temple tradition known as soot removal. Little do people know that the same two men, Kazuyoshi Taguchi and Kazumi Minowa, have handled the entire job for close to 25 years, despite neither having a climbing background when they started. They ride an internal lift to the statue's chest height, around 85 metres up, then finish the climb by ladder and rope, hauling roughly 150 kilograms of gear including a high pressure washer across several trips. At the top they work with just water and light pressure rather than detergent, since bronze discolours easily under harsher cleaning, clearing a year's worth of dust and bird droppings from the statue's eyes, face and ears. #cleaning #duo #buddha #mildlyinteresting
