How to rewrite yours: Say what you make in plain words. Your first line should be a sentence you'd say out loud. Not, my practice interrogates the liminal space between memory and materiality. Just, I paint the streets I grew up on, from memory. If you'd never say it to a person, don't write it. Say why you make it, and tell the truth. Not the clever reason, the real one. The place, the feeling, the thing you keep coming back to. People connect with the why far more than the what. Read the whole thing out loud. Fastest edit there is. Every word you'd be embarrassed to say to a mate, cut it. Explores, evokes, liminal, dialogue. Gone. Keep it short. Three or four sentences. A statement is not an essay. Nobody ever bought a painting because the wall text was long. Before: my work explores themes of memory and identity through a material lens. After: I paint the house I grew up in from memory, so it always comes out slightly wrong, which is exactly how memory works. You don't need to sound clever to be taken seriously. Sounding human is the rarest thing in that room, and it's what makes people stop.
