Summer before 6th grade I asked my mom if I could chop my long, beautiful curly/wavy hair into a pixie & she said yes😭neither of us knew how to style it, it was so ugly & I was called names for like 2 years (the grow out was brutal). She knew it would look bad bc my hair was so curly but she never said anything bc she wanted me to have agency lol. It destroyed my self worth/confidence. I’m 37 now & I still struggle!

Everyone goes through embarrassing style choices as a kid/teen parents need to let their kid make that mistake

My family was Catholic and very very conservative. I had a spectacular emo phase. I would wear the knee length floral skirts to school, and then because I couldn’t keep them at home, I swapped clothes into stuff my friend Brenna brought from home. I remember putting on eyeliner in the girls bathroom, and then having to take it off again before I got on the bus home. Also, Brenna’s mom was awesome, she took me shopping about eight or 10 times over the years bought me clothes and then hung them in Brenna’s room, but they were all mine; not even a hand-me-down and she kept them all there until I graduated high school, and she sent them with me in a big duffle bag when I left for college. It was funny to look through it when I got into my dorm room, because I was looking through some of the sets, and it was stuff from when I was like 11 years old all the way up through high school, and I’m like…. “Damn, I used to be this tiny!” The first time I had a break for a long weekend in college I did not go home, I stayed for three days with the Wagners and Brenna wasn’t even home that time. ❤️Mrs. Wagner might be the only reason I didn’t go entirely off the rails as soon as I left home; she’s I was treated me like one of her own, even though she’s got six younger kids. Maybe she was just extra nice to me because I was always doing free babysitting, and Brenna didn’t complain about it if I was there. But she definitely loves me, I know that for sure! ❤️

one big thing with my mom when i was little was hair dye. i wanted purple hair SO BAD, but my mom wasn’t so sure. she let me dye the ends of my hair in semi-permanent maroon. it lasted about 2 months until it all washed out. i did end up not loving it when i saw how it looked with different clothes, but her letting me experiment with it safely rather than saying no and me potentially doing it myself and causing a disaster. it didn’t mean much to me then but it really does now!

and keep in mind a lot of the time they do grow out of it. i went through a bunch of styles, now i'm incredibly basic. obviously no guarantee, but especially if your kid is under 14-15, there's a good chance they'll never want to wear it again in a couple years

We compromise. During school we are basic. On the weekends I let her wear whatever as long as it is decent

If their style suddenly changes along with their behavior then I’d say that’s reason to question it. If they seem to be maintaining their grades & attitude is positive then it’s okay to let them try new things.

honestly I'd never listen to my parents when they told me what to wear. i wasn't allowed to cut my hair at all when i was a kid and at 11 i just chopped all of it off and they never cared about it again. just let kids do what they want if it's not gonna hurt anyone cause if they want to do something they'll do it anyways

As a teenager my parents and peers shouted at me daily for how i dressed. This picture was a year ago so clearly i didn’t listen! Ill be teaching my children to do what they want and not care about others opinions. I think thats more important as someone whos been through it

My daughter picked out a shirt I neverrr would have picked for her, I was hesitant to even buy it for her, almost talked her out of it, bc it had a very bold print on it. She wore it to the mall today and got 3 compliments from strangers . Here’s a pic. Sometimes kids see the vision that the adult doesn’t. ❤️❤️❤️

Most parents need to realize they have no clue what’s actually in style now just like their parents didnt either. Not all but more than would care to admit.

My daughter wanted purple hair for 4th grade. We went and she got wash out dye at the salon. It’s been gone now for weeks and I’ve never heard another word about it. 🤗 Just figured if she likes fun hair she’s gonna try it now or later when I’m not around so…

I used to wear Kandi bracelets up to the elbows at times, I felt embarrassed but it was fun and I'd rather be a bit embarrassed than have controlling boring parents

I let my daughter change up her style with the exception no cropped anything and no big sweaters when it’s hot . She has so much more confidence now while still being age appropriate

whyyyy do parents feel the need to share their opinion on their children’s style/choices? psa to parents, you do not own your kid…

I dressed kind of weird in like 8th and 9th grade. It wasn’t so crazy that I stuck out like a sore thumb but it was enough that I look back and cringe. But it was also in 2020-2021 when trends were very different. It’s something my mom and I laugh about and we can look back on pictures and we find it funny. I think I if I were being bullied over it she would’ve intervened but that wasn’t the case so it wasn’t a big deal. I need to find a picture to insert here because some of my outfits were kind of funny!
