@philosophyminis: We let kids run around for a few years, exploring, playing, and gawping in curiosity at the world, and then we'd jam them into classrooms. Sit down, stop fidgeting, and let's learn this. You'll have a few minutes at break time to run off your energy, but, until then, it's phonics, algebra, and then the water cycle until you leave. But, according to the American philosopher John Dewey, this is all wrong. In the late 19th century, Dewey and his wife, Alice, set up a school in Chicago known as the ‘Laboratory School.’ Dewey was a pragmatist, and his particular kind said that all philosophy and all learning should be tied to the real world. Dewey thought that education should help us. It should make us better human beings, but also more functional human beings as well. And so, the curriculum in the Laboratory School was almost entirely practical. Instead of lessons, they had occupations. For example, a class might spend an entire morning gardening, and, as they planted seeds and harvested crops, they were doing maths. As they learned how plants grew, they were doing biology. As they waited for the rains to fall, they were doing the water cycle. The curriculum was broad, but it was always tied to doing. These days, our education system and educators are far, far better than the chalk-and-talk professors of old. Good teachers will bring fun and the practical applications into their lessons. And yet, kids are still taught in classrooms, from necessity as much as anything else. But Dewey's educational philosophy said that education should be out in the world, because it's out in the world that we will all actually go about our lives.

Dewey was well intentioned but naive. He affected general education somewhat with project based learning but there are reasons why school is the way it is. The main reason is because education under democracy forces endless compromises.

This method makes so much more sense. It’s also harder for students to half ass and avoid trial and error. There’s still a reward to push you through even if things are hard because there are multiple visible merits to your physical engagement
