It’s important to note that Africa is still largely colonized financially

i thank my AP world history teacher for creating a timeline for every continent bc it gets complicated tryna understand colonialism and imperialism throughout the world as well as their collateral impact.

It’s genuinely very jarring how people just gloss over the impact and nuances of colonialism and go straight to telling people in Africa “don’t be poor 🤷🏼♂️”

it's easier for people to just call Africans lazy, dumb and corrupt than to take time to understand why the world has been structured the way it is...a few people will leave their comfort zones to seek this knowledge and sit with the harsh truth that we've been lied to. Africa and the Middle East have been victims of the worst propaganda ever !

And even after “independence” they still kept strong pressure on the governments through neocolonialism

and I think you can also add that even among African countries, colonisation looked different: some countries were protectorates while others were settler colonies, a difference that manifests in how "developed" these countries were before the indigenous people took political power back

The British sowed division and resentments that led to civil wars by choosing certain classes to get educated, leadership positions, etc. Eg Sudan and South Sudan

Zimbabwe and South Africa were colonised differently. In those countries Europeans wanted to settle

also I'd like to add I think we overestimate European control in these regions, apart from a few countries like South Africa, Algeria, Kenya (maybe) Angolan, Zimbabwe. European control wasn't that strong outside of "urban" areas which weren't many. those maps were just for Europeans elites of time to not fight eachother but on the ground most people didn't really live under European law, I'd probably say the only European institution that had a great impact was the catholic church for the french and the Anglican church for the British.

Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, is in THROES of NEOCOLONIALISM, which is actually a lot worse than pre independence Colonialism.

There's a good paper about this I need to dig up... America, Australia, New Zealand etc were colonized for the purposes of settlement which created a totally different economic and legal structure.
