@theadventureaddicts: recipe & tips for DIY meals 👇 I have been making 90% of our backpacking meals for 5 years now and absolutely LOVE IT. I started with a dehydrator, and last year was gifted this freeze drier (thank you harvest right 💕💕), and I have just so enjoyed the meals that we can make!! DIY pad thai: INGREDIENTS: 1 onion diced 1 bell pepper diced 1 box rice noodles Chicken thighs (diced) pad thai sauce 6 eggs Garlic cilantro green onion peanuts or peanut butter limes sriracha RECIPE: 1. Cook the rice noodles according to the box instructions 2. add water to a pan, and sauté onions and bell peppers. Add garlic, salt, pepper, and chicken & cook through 3. Scramble eggs in a separate pan. 4. add cooked rice noodles, sauce, and eggs to the chicken and pepper mix 5. top with green onion, cilantro, and lime juice 6. Freeze dry (or dehydrate!) 7. Package into mylar bags. On the trail, we just add just enough boiling water to the bag to cover the food, let it sit for ~5 minutes, and enjoy!! A few tips for getting started: - Get a dehydrator or a freeze dryer! We use a dehydrator from @hamiltonbeach that we absolutely love (and it’s very affordable!), or our @harvestright freeze dryer (shown here). LMK if you want me to make a video comparing the two! - Dehydrate meats (or veggie proteins): make sure to chop the meat into as small of pieces as possible to help with rehydration. - avoid really fatty meats or fatty foods (I usually steer clear from cheesy dishes). Fat doesn’t dehydrate or freeze dry as well, and can make the food go bad. - Avoid oils and butters as much as possible: oil is really hard to dehydrate/freeze dry completely, and will reduce the shelf life of the meal. I cook with water or a teeny tiny bit of oil if I need. - Most meals, will be best eaten within 1 month within a ziplock bag, and can last much longer in a vacuum sealed and frozen bag. - Rehydrating can be done either in the ziplock, Mylar, or @stasherbag just like pre-made meals, or you can put it in your pot with water. Let us know what questions you have about this process!! #campcooking #backpacking #campingfood

Ok but how do I convince my wife that we could save 7-10 dollars PER MEAL, if only we bought a $5000 freeze dryer!

Would you make a video comparing your dehydrator to the freeze dryer, because 3k is a huge leap from a dehydrator, and quite the investment for camping 🏕 Thank you so much! ✨

How do you know what the weight/calorie ratio is once it’s freeze dried? Do you portion it just based on what fits in the bag? Or have you already done the math that a wet portion at say 10oz = a dry portion at 4oz?

I wonder how much money you saved doing it that way. When I backpack I always buy the premade stuff and it’s so expensive.
