like why didn't we hear and see Katara doing more during season 2?? I know that she would have some BIG FEELINGS about that civil war

I think it's a flaw of atla's rushed ending. aang is the avatar, so he's the balance of the 4 nations. zuko is the fire lord, so he's a head of state and an essential political figure. katara? they didn't bother to establish her as anything but girlfriend and "sweetie" so she's easily forgetable. they made suki the leader of the kyoshi warriors before killing her off which honestly surprises me as bryke don't care about her. they didn't hook katara to anything but an extension of the avatar, so no wonder we have all these random screenshots of books saying she traveled the world when I'm pretty sure that wasn't the original intention but a response to these kind of criticism. I wouldn't be surprised if they retcon it all with these new movies and comics. I doubt they had plans for katara while they wrote tlok but be sad she's widowed

People have literally said to me, "She was a child in ATLA. People change." Like, wtf? Lol. First, core aspects of people's personalities are usually pretty locked in, actually. And on top of that, she is a not a real person, she's a character, so having MAJOR aspects of her core personality and belief system change drastically off screen is bad writing, period.

Looking at Katara’s story in ATLA and later TLOK we see how the show turns her from a person with her own goals into just a background character. In ATLA we don’t really meet Katara for herself. We meet her through Aang’s eyes. She’s the first kind face he sees, the one who believes in him, takes care of him , heals him, and finally forgives him. The show treats her like a reward for the hero ,the caring girl who picks the chosen boy. Her anger, her compassion, even her forgiveness all exist to help Aang grow. Because of that, the story never gives her a future that’s just hers. Her job was to support him, and once that was done, the story didn’t know what else to do with her. In TLOK Aang is gone, and now the show cares about Korra instead. Katara is pushed to the side. She shows up to heal someone once and to talk about Aang. She’s not doing anything with all the power and history she has. She’s just sitting there, dressed in dull colors, looking like the past and that sends a clear message she mattered only while she was needed and wanted by the hero. You can literally see how different it is with Toph. Toph was never written to be liked or chosen by a guy and she was allowed to be rude, stubborn, powerful, and wrong without criticism. Because of that, she gets to keep her own life in LOK. Her value didn’t depend on a man, so she didn’t disappear when the story moved on. Katara’s story follows the same old pattern for the “main girl.” She’s important while she’s young and useful to the hero. The second a new younger girl ( Korra) takes the spotlight, she’s put on a shelf. It’s not about who she married. It’s about the fact that the show never let her be the main character of her own life. It only knew how to value her as someone who was chosen. And once she was chosen, and then Aang died , the story acted like she had nothing left to choose for herself. It is what happens when the text defines a female character in relation to the hero and then moves on to the next heroine.

Bumi doesn't even have a wolf cut yet his mother's tribe caters non-bending warriors. he's left salivating for his father's approval yet he has role models like his uncle and grandfather. Katara's culture wasn't poignant enough for them to truly include it in the narrative.

It's interesting, because there is a portion of the fandom that really hates TLOK turned Aang into an imperfect father, to say the least, and think that is mischaracterizing him. I don't necessarily agree that it's mischaracterizing him, but it's interesting that thay portion of the fandom is willing to be critical then.

I don’t know I see your point, but I also think a lot of the fight in her was due to the fire nation threat, and what happened to her mom. Once that threat was neutralized, I could see how she would want to lean into her healing abilities more. Like what was she gonna fight for?

in general the rule with any kind of time skips is thing slowed down a LOT unless we're going to be exploring things on detail so a side character in LOK like Katara wouldn't be getting tons and tons of development past when we last saw her (ATLA and maybe some of the comics that were out)

im still salty none of the legacy characters get to meet. like, beyond even beyond my great fondness of the old/second-chance-at-love-Zutara concept, it seems like having them see each other (and Toph) again would be a writing no brainer.
