@henryfudgeofficial: Everyone else’s rentier black hole hollows out the economy. China’s built the workshop of the world instead. Same disease, opposite symptom. Part 2 of 3. The reason is who holds the money, and it leaves them with 173 trillion yuan and nowhere to put it. #rentierblackhole #china #macroeconomics #economics #internationaltrade
China is an example of the success of central planning. Part of the success of Chinese production is ruthless efficiency. BYD cars are cheap as a result. High speed trains exist because if related ecosystems. There’s standardized rolling stock that is homegrown. So there aren’t long procurement processes for subways and high speed rail. The CCP believes that the fruits of capital should benefit the citizenry, not be concentrated in a few hands

Ironically, the best investments western societies have made were during the cold war. When the state need to direct investment to compete with the Soviets. Once the cold war was over, the market decided to prefer short term gains.

that's genuinely one of those "my lobster is too buttery" problems, what do I do with all this money and nowhere productive to use it on?

China does what other countries don't do, they play the long game.
They work in generations, while everyone else is only looking 5-10 years into the future.
Every country has their own issues, but China has some of the lowest rates of homelessness in the world.
The west are just letting their citizens die.

China sets policy for the good of the state and the citizens and then for oligarchs. Western countries have been setting policy for the good of the oligarchs with citizens and nation considered only after the oligarchs got everything they wanted. The results speak for themselves.

As a Chinese, I’d also like to point out something else. We don’t have a strong social net, and the country is HUGE so the regional economy varies a lot. The UK might be able to learn from our economy, but I don’t know how useful our experiences can be to the UK. Our economy is build on hundreds of years of hard-working and you may call it meritocracy culture. It’s about personal sacrifice, parents do everything they can for their kids, kids giving up sleep and social life to study, and people giving up personal life to go higher on the career ladder. and it’s very specific. It’s related to our philosophy and religions. I don’t want to comment on whether it’s good or bad, because I don’t feel like I am qualified to judge something so much bigger than me and bigger than just one generation. But I have to say our culture build an economy miracle, and it did help people, although not everyone at the same time and at the same level, get out of poverty.

I was watching a podcast by Paul Krugman and Martin Wolf. They basically said deflation and involution can be solved whenever goverment decides to do so and having that as a problem would be any western economist's dream
