I love an MRI. I'm Australian, and my only MRI expense is paying the hospital car park fee of $12. I had my annual MRI last Sunday afternoon. It was blissful. I have to use my cane occasionally in the height of summer. I had no problem getting positioned on the bed. Nevertheless, I had 2 nurses, one on each side working together, adjusting a large and cushion under my legs and wedging my head with mini cushions to stabilise it. These glorious angels worked in tandem with the precision and grace of synchronised swimmers. Instead of a gold medal, my radiology angels were focused solely on my comfort. This was a brain and spine day, 45 minutes! My hospital doesn't have the option to listen to music or podcasts, just ear protection, which is my preference. Per standard procedure, an angel asks if I'm claustrophobic. "No, I'm the opposite. I refer to the MRI as my metal cocoon of solitude, the site of enforcemed meditation, I love it!" I warned them I might fall asleep and the potential challenges if they need to wake me. As the bed conveyed me into my cocoon and my angels left the room, I closed my eyes and focused on my breath. I drifted off to a state I can best describe as halfway between deep meditation and sleep. When the bed conveyed me out of my cocoon, I had my traditional fleeting moment of disappointment. Then I felt refreshed, thanked my angels, and went home.
