@jarexit: The Ọṣun-Ọṣogbo Sacred Grove in Nigeria. Slightly disappointed by Ife and desperate for a holy experience, we went to our final Nigerian stop: Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, and it was by far the most spiritual place I found in this country, with a backstory just as inspirational. According to Yoruba belief, this Osun River is a fully-fledged deity or an Orisha, who is broadly concerned with fertility. You are looking at a genuine goddess, my friends. When this natural area came under threat of demolition and neglect, an Austrian-born woman named Susanne Wenger had a genius idea. She appealed to local artists to join her in erecting huge statues. It didn’t take long before these undeniably holy creations caught public interest, and the urban expansion ceased in favour of something far more mystical, with UNESCO recognition following. Unfortunately, I do not feel it’s appropriate to share everything I saw, but I will tell you there were queues of women looking to bathe their daughters in the fertility water, there were buckets of blood, and there were decapitated goats. Meanwhile, I tried my best to be respectful, but made some mistakes. For example, I foolishly tried to walk through this structure, and if you listen carefully, you can hear them shouting at me. That shook me. Still, I look back on the grove with extreme fondness. All I seek is high-energy feeling places, and in Africa, this was the one. This is why I travel. #osunosogbo #nigerianmyth #yorubaculture #spiritualtravel #osun
