@offenceregister: Rob Roberts • The Case: The Member of Parliament for Delyn was reported to parliamentary authorities following allegations that he made persistent, unwanted sexual advances towards a male member of his staff and a female intern. • Legal Outcome: The Independent Expert Panel (IEP) found Roberts guilty of severe sexual misconduct and breach of parliament's anti-harassment policy, leading to a six-week suspension from the House of Commons in May 2021. • Summary & Case Details: Rob Roberts was elected as the Conservative MP for Delyn in the general election of December 2019. Within months of taking office, reports surfaced regarding inappropriate conduct towards staff members. An official complaint lodged with the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS) outlined how Roberts had made repeated, unwanted sexual advances towards a junior male staff member during a work trip, alongside sending inappropriate messages to a female intern. The case was escalated to the Independent Expert Panel (IEP), which conducted a thorough review of electronic messages and witness testimony. In May 2021, the IEP issued its findings, determining that Roberts had committed significant acts of sexual harassment and abused his authority as an employer. The panel recommended a six-week suspension from Parliament, which was approved by the House of Commons. Following the ruling, Roberts was stripped of the Conservative party whip, though a loophole in recall legislation at the time prevented a constituent recall petition because the suspension was ordered by an independent panel rather than a parliamentary committee, allowing him to remain as an independent MP until the next election.
