@_truecrimewithtee: The Mysterious Death of Elisa Lam In January 2013, 21 year old Canadian student Elisa Lam travelled alone to California as part of a solo trip along the West Coast. She arrived in Los Angeles on 26 January and checked into the Cecil Hotel, a building that had gained a reputation over the years due to its association with crime and unexplained deaths. At first, Elisa stayed in a shared hostel style room, but after her roommates reportedly complained about her unusual behaviour, she was moved to a private room. She remained in regular contact with her parents in Canada, calling them every day. However, on 31st January, the calls suddenly stopped. Concerned, her parents contacted the Los Angeles Police Department and reported her missing. As investigators searched for Elisa, police released surveillance footage from one of the hotel’s elevators. The video quickly went viral and remains one of the most discussed pieces of true crime footage online. In the footage, Elisa appears to press multiple elevator buttons, repeatedly steps in and out of the elevator, peeks into the hallway, gestures with her hands as though talking to someone, and at one point hides in a corner. The elevator doors remain open for an unusually long time before finally closing after she leaves. The strange behaviour shown in the video led to widespread speculation. Some believed Elisa was frightened and hiding from someone. Others suggested she was experiencing a mental health crisis. The footage sparked countless theories involving foul play, paranormal activity, and even government conspiracies, although none of these theories were supported by evidence. In the days that followed, hotel guests began complaining that the water from their taps was discoloured, had a strange taste, and had very low water pressure. On 19th February 2013, nearly three weeks after Elisa disappeared, a hotel maintenance worker inspected one of the rooftop water tanks and made a horrifying discovery: Elisa’s body was floating inside. The rooftop was not easily accessible to guests, which fuelled further speculation about how she ended up there. However, investigators found no evidence of physical assault or struggle. The Los Angeles County Coroner concluded that Elisa died from accidental drowning, with bipolar disorder listed as a significant contributing factor. Toxicology results found no evidence of illegal drugs and only trace amounts of her prescribed medication, suggesting she may not have been taking it consistently. Although the official ruling was accidental drowning, many people continue to question aspects of the case, particularly how Elisa accessed the rooftop and entered the water tank.
