@always_philistinie: A fortress, built in a day — and called a village. In 1936, as Palestine rose in revolt against British rule and Zionist settlement, a new invention appeared on hilltop after hilltop: a prefabricated fortress erected between sunrise and sunset. A double wall of timber filled with gravel. A guard tower at the center. A ring of barbed wire. They called the method Wall and Tower. Fifty-seven settlements went up this way — most of them kibbutzim. And around nearly every one, in 1948, the Palestinians of the surrounding land were driven out. One of the system's designers was a Bauhaus student. Shmuel Mestechkin — Dessau, class of 1931 — came back, ran the Haganah's mapping office, and put modernism to work on fortification. After the Nakba he drew the master plans for some sixty kibbutzim. For Kibbutz Nirim, built on the ruins of Ma'in Abu Sitta, he signed the plan in August 1949: a pentagon, the shape of artillery fortresses since the fifteenth century. Fortifications first. Homes later. None of it was improvised. The army's Settlement Division wrote the manual: villages spaced at mortar range — three to five kilometres — weaving a matrix of fire. Buildings turned narrow-side to the enemy. Twenty centimetres of concrete. The planners called these villages hedgehogs. Small, like fists in the landscape. When one hand draws the nursery and the firing positions, the village is a weapon system. Not a metaphor. A blueprint. The Israeli historian of architecture Sharon Rotbard says Wall and Tower never ended — its DNA is in Israeli architecture still. And the Bauhaus? Its deepest legacy here is not Tel Aviv's White City. It is the Gaza envelope.
