The plot of XY and XYZ was much better for most people because it's a bit more "serious" and less childish. However, the series couldn't end there because it would take away Pikachu's prominence. The reason many of us are unhappy with the Pokémon creators' decisions is that the series is still a children's show. If it weren't a children's show, or if it became a bit more serious, they could make things like Serena and Ash's romance canon.
