@pastorsarahomakwu: WHO IS YOUR NEXT OF KIN? YOUR SIBLING OR YOUR SPOUSE? This is a conversation many married couples need to have. Your siblings are your family, but when you are married, your spouse is the person you have chosen to build a life with. Your spouse should not be left in the dark about your finances, investments, bank accounts, insurance, properties, debts, or important documents. Too many people assume, “My family knows what I have.” But does your spouse? If something happens to you, will your spouse know where your important documents are? Will they know about your investments? Do they know your debts? Have you clearly stated who should have access to what you have built? Marriage creates a new family unit. The Bible says: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh - Genesis 2:24 (NKJV) This does not mean your siblings stop being your family. It means that marriage comes with a new level of covenant, responsibility, and unity. And let’s be clear: next-of-kin rules and inheritance laws vary by country and circumstance. Being listed as a next of kin does not automatically mean someone inherits everything you own. That is why proper estate planning, beneficiary designations, and a valid will are important. But beyond the legal technicalities, there is a principle every married couple should understand Your spouse should not be the last person to know about your life. Talk about your finances. Share important information. Make plans together. Don't leave your spouse trying to piece together your financial life in a crisis. Marriage is sweet when there is transparency, trust, and partnership.
