“I hang the lassos in honour of our herders, who are not only sustaining their reindeer but also a living Sámi culture,” artist Máret Ánne Sara explains. She has suspended dozens of suohpanat – lassos used in reindeer herding – from an overhead structure in Kiasma’s gallery space, forming the installation Gielastuvvon (Snared). The artist collected the lassos from her local reindeer-herding community. Each one bears traces of use – or “individual histories”, as the artist describes it. Sara comes from a reindeer-herding family in Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino), and this livelihood – central to her own life – is a recurring focus in her work.
