A jury in Barrow County, Georgia, on Tuesday convicted a man of 29 crimes, including murder, for giving his son the AR-15 he used to kill four people at a high school in 2024. Colin Gray will remain in custody through sentencing, which has not been scheduled. He’s been in jail since Sept. 5, 2024, one day after his son Colt Gray, then 14, killed two students and two teachers and wounded nine other people at Apalachee High School in Winder. Jurors deliberated four hours today (Tuesday, March 3)after 10 days of testimony and all-day closing arguments. Gray testified as his only defense witness. You can watch some of his testimony here @Meghann Cuniff. Colt had a long history of behavioral problems and missing school, and he was so interested in school shooters that he put pictures on his wall of Nikolas Cruz, who murdered 17 people and wounded 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. In 2021, police went to his home after Colt searched “how to kill your dad.” Then in 2023, sheriff’s investigators went to his home after the FBI traced a threat on Discord about a school shooting to an IP address associated with Gray. They told Gray to restrict his son’s access to guns, but seven months later, Gray bought Colt a Sig Saur M400 AR-style rifle for Christmas. Colt wasn’t enrolled in school for long periods of time, and evidence in trial documented his spiraling mental health problems that led to Gray and his estranged wife, Marcee, giving Colt some of Marcee’s prescription Zoloft pills. Gray discussed enrolling Colt in counseling but never did so. When police arrived at his home after the shooting on Sept. 4, 2024, Gray told them, “God, I knew it” and said his daughter texted him that her middle school was in lockdown “and I’m like, please tell me your brother didn't do something.” The crimes: Two counts of second-degree murder for deaths of students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Under Georgia's statute, causing a child's death through second-degree cruelty qualifies as second-degree murder. Two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie 22 counts of second-degree cruelty to children: One count for each victim (those killed and those injured) as well as students in the immediate vicinity who experienced the trauma of the event Three counts of reckless conduct for failing to secure the weapon or heed warnings about his son’s mental state, which prosecutors argued constituted a gross deviation from a reasonable standard of care #law #crime #jury #verdict #court
