@shanell_oliver1: More than a third of Argentina was Black in 1800. By the 2010 census, that number had fallen to 0.365 percent. That’s not decline. That’s erasure by design. In the 1990s, President Carlos Menem said out loud what the policy had been doing quietly for a century: “In Argentina, blacks do not exist, that is a Brazilian problem.” A sitting president denying an entire population existed, while Black Argentines were still living in Buenos Aires neighborhoods like San Telmo, the very ground where enslaved Africans were once held in the highest numbers in the city. The erasure wasn’t just war and disease. It was bureaucratic. Afro descendants got quietly reclassified into lighter racial categories on census forms, pardo instead of negro, until the label “black” simply stopped appearing in the records. The people didn’t vanish. The paperwork did.

Use this same engery to relieve the economic deprivation of many blacks in Colombia. We cannot keep regurgitating history while at the same time ignoring those who are still alive and will need help. You cannot bring back those lost blacks in Argentina, but you can empower those there to influence the next decade.
