You can still provide a generic answer that explains some key characteristics that emerge in most, if not all definitions of facism (eg. far right, authoritianism, ultranationalism). If facism has no actual definition or baseline, how do even have any idea whatsoever of what on earth we are talking about when we use the word "facism"? Turns out we do have an idea of what it is, we just disagree on some of the nitty gritty details of it. "Idk" is absolutely not a valid answer

throwing stuff like fascism at right wing governments normalises how bad it actually is; there's regimes today with fascist elements but trying to define them in a small way allows people who defend those policies to minimise them when you can't give a quick, on the spot answer

Tilly, I agree that fascism resists interpretation and definition, but to say we can’t define it to some degree can’t possibly be right. In practice, fascism definitely has a particular look and political stance. Simply having multiple definitions that overlap doesn’t mean that it’s undefinable. I’d be willing to bet that if you put all those scholars into a room, they would all agree on some core definition of fascism.

Could you not define different kinds of fascism similarly to how you can define different branches of communism (I.e. Marxist Leninism, Stalinism, etc.)? You still have the umbrella term of communism but theirs different views of it beneath that. If we take that approach and have hitlerian fascism, neofascism, etc. could that help to better define fascism not just as one concrete thing? This has probably already been done and I’m making myself look like an idiot but it was just a thought I had.

Well, technically Fascism is one of our exclusive important “ism”, which fascism in itself is a multi-conceptual framework, I get what your saying that it’s pretty complicated. But describing it and getting a solid definition in about a couple sentences is possible. But very nice on giving everyone a clear connotative view of the word “Fascism”. 🤔👍
