Hard disagree. If I DNF a book, it’s because it was so terribly written, I was losing brain cells. It’s my duty to warn other about terrible writing. It’s the basic structure, along with storytelling, that makes reading fun.

Hear me out. As long as you qualify that it was a DNF and WHY it was a DNF and how far you got it should be allowed. I read reviews because the DNF’s tell just as much or more than the finished ones. I also see what other books you enjoyed, hated and DNFed because that will tell me if our tastes align. I’ve had books I wish people who DNFed had warned me.

I disagree because why the person didn’t finish it is important. If I’m looking at reviews, I want to hear from the people who didn’t finish it too. I want to know why they didn’t finish it. That’s important to me.

I completely agree, no I don’t care why you didn’t finish the book, your rating is useless to me because you didn’t finish the book, but I also haven’t come across a book that I disliked enough to DNF it

I absolutely agree with you. I refuse to DNF a book, even if I think it’s trash, because I want to be an informed hater.

It’s more like walking into a restaurant, not liking the appetizer and then leaving. You still have to pay for the drinks and app and therefore can leave a review for what you experienced. That being said I do think you should state if you DNF’d and your rating is based on what you read. I can usually tell if I’m gonna finish a book or not in the first 30-40%.

I don’t normally rate books that I DNF unless it was so terrible that I think I need to warn people. Even then, I don’t usually rate it

I have no issues with someone reviewing a book, explaining their reasons for discontinuing the read.... but to RATE it? Nope.

I agree, and it's why I prefer using StoryGraph over Goodreads.
StoryGraph will let you DNF and you can leave a review, but it doesn't let you rate the book. In the reviews, where the stars would be it shows it as a DNF.
But yes, people DNF for stupid reasons. Even if it's 'bad writing', I swear I see people call some books bad writing and then recommend worse written books.

I only give good reviews. If I do not like the book, I don't leave a review. That includes DNF books. Jyst because I don't care for, doesn't mean someone won't.

I don’t rate books I DNFd. I don’t rate books that are below 3 ⭐️, unless it’s something really bad like an Ai prompt left in or they cross boundaries and don’t give a TW for it ( would really only do that for child abuse/ sexual assault)

as a audible reader I have stopped listening due to the narraters, I get everybody has different likes but if I can't get into the book because either the storyline or the narrators it's done

Isn’t a dnf a form of rating on its own?

If you post an honest review in regards to having not finished it, I’d rather know what issues I might encounter before I start if there’s a reason I would agree

Totally agree...keep your ratings off goodreads if you dnf'd. You arent helping anyone, especially if you only dnf'd it because you weren't in the mood or realized its not a subject you like.

I would agree that it's unfair to rate a book or post a review if you DNFd.
I disagree that you don't get to have an opinion on a DNF, you just have to be upfront about where that opinion is coming from.
