@thehotmesshomestead: What are the top laying breeds I'd suggest? I thought it would be fun to bring this subject back around because it's been a minute since I've made videos on the different breeds out there. Of course, every chicken is different and it depends on the genetics that are being bred into that chicken, but these or what I would suggest if your biggest concern is egg production! #Homestead #Homesteading #FarmAnimals #Farming
I have Rhode Island reds buff orpingtons and silver laced Wyandottes. The Wyandottes are not friendly! They are the mean girls in my flock. Orpingtons are like a golden retriever of the chicken world!

I have leghorns and golden comets. I hate my leghorns but both them, and my comets, lay year round here in Oregon. The only chicken I have lost to eagles was a leghorn. I got an egg from all but 2 of my hens on the Winter Solstice.

My RIRs are awesome. My rooster is a RIR. He’s 6 but is also Heritage RIR. Hes bigger and so smart and so sweet. He’s wonderful with my kids. I did have a non heritage RIR and he was such a butt. He found a new home. I have all those breeds except for the Leghorns. The Orphingtons are wonderful. Barred Rocks are too. I just got Speckled Sussex and am so excited to see how they do. So far they are pretty friendly birds and very smart.

Savannah -Hot Mess Homestead- :
I've decided to do a lot more back to the basic beginner videos! I think that I always assume that if people are watching me, they probably know most of what I can teach, but I recently started my journey of sewing and oh my gosh. I remember what it's like to be a complete newbie to a subject.
So to those wanting chickens and going "what's a brooder? Wait what's broody mean?? What do I need besides a coop?"
We are going to "go back to the basics" and make sure everyone feels confident and ready to own chickens! Sometimes I just feel like a broken record or that everyone already knows what little I might have to offer.
So if there's any specific topics you would like me to make to videos on let me know!

I would love to hear about breeds for “pretty” eggs- blue, green, speckled, pink/purple (possible blooms). I would love to have pretty eggs to look forward to!

Hens: 7 RIR, 2 wellsummers, 3 gold laced wyandottes, one calico princess, 3 speckled Sussex and 3 black sexlink. With 2 RIR Roosters. The RIR hens are rather…..stupid. Lmao. And loud. The RIR are huge and total assholes with humans but amazing protectors and providers for their girls. The speckled Sussex are terrified of everything, the wellsummers are super smart and friendly, wyandottes are bitches to the flock, but one of them is my favorite girl and rides in my shoulder when’s I’m outside. Thr black sexlink are incredibly docile, curious, and SMART. I don’t really pay attention to how many eggs. I collect them and give them to my homecare patients and my husbands colleagues. 🥴 We got them for eggs, but now they’re my favorite source of entertainment 🫶🏼🥰

My black australorp is head of my flock (despite having a rooster lol) and she has the best personality! She has never been broody herself but she is very respectful of mamas and babies in the flock and has never bullied any new additions. She’s even cool hanging out with my ducks sometimes too 🥰
