@mistyjanssen: One of the most dangerous phrases in leadership is: “Well… it happened to me, and I turned out okay.” Did you? Or did you just survive it? Psychologically, this is called normalization. When we’ve lived through something difficult, our brains often convince us it wasn’t that bad because admitting otherwise means acknowledging we were hurt or that someone failed us. But survival isn’t the same thing as good leadership. I remember standing in line as a kid waiting for government cheese. My children will never stand in that line. Not because I’m ashamed of where I came from, but because every generation should build a better life than the one before it. The same is true in the military. My Marines and Sailors will not have to tolerate the abuse that I tolerated. Not on my watch. High standards? Absolutely. Accountability? Every day. Discipline? Non-negotiable. Humiliation, intimidation, or treating people poorly because “that’s how I was raised?” No. Leadership isn’t about preserving our scars. It’s about making sure the next generation doesn’t have to earn the same ones. If you’re too afraid to lead Marines without resorting to abuse, then step aside. Because there is someone right behind you who can. #Leadership #MarineCorps #MilitaryLeadership #ServantLeadership #LeadByExample

I was raped in 2003 before I got out it was the worst thing ever. My command made it all my fault and it wasn't. I wish I could run into the pos who did it

I’ll never forget being the only female Marine in the “rape training class”. They all laughed and made disgusting jokes. Foul behavior

I had my company 1stSgt get in my face and call me a fukking whore when I got pregnant at 22. The men always seemed to think it was okay to get in your face and tell you what a pos you were and no one said anything

in all due respect SgtMaj, I loved my government cheese. mom and me got welfare and food stamps. better than being homeless. and we were homeless at times too. I am very sorry about the other situation too. I have heard too many war stories about sexual assault cases when I was in the Marines. I knew a Female Marine that was a sexual assault survivor and we went to war together. Great Marine!

I'm being punished and shunned by one of my senior leaders for reporting a fellow Staff NCO for sexually assaulting my female Marine. Being treated like garbage for doing the right thing makes me want to get out at 14 years because everyone turns a blind eye to what he did.

Yeah we got hazed when we got to the fleet. Platoon sergeant always making us stupid games. Once I was a platoon sergeant, I didn’t allow it either. It’s not productive either.

grew up on government cheese, grew up with wic joined the marines and see how un grateful some marines can be having a roof and food and spending money carelessly. Sometimes I appreciate hard times but definitely understand this pov

Wish I had this leadership while I was in, especially when female leaders should have other female marines backs. I tried to take my own life and told my Sgt the next day after it didn’t work and she just said I’m sorry you feel that way, do you wanna talk to a counselor?

I was in an attempted sexual assault in my office as a commander. It doesn’t just happen to enlisted, young people, or whatever demographic in a study. Women are assaulted regardless of rank and authority.

RAH SGTMAJ! Thank you for being an example for me to follow. This is legit the only thing some junior Marines want to hear sometimes. Is that SOMEONE is willing to go to bat for them against the most toxic leaders that slimmed their way through.
