and it's not what you think for so long I thought I needed closure or there was some healing that I still needed to do it was actually because my nervous system was still using them to make sure I was okay. for some people, that was making sure I was earning love and approval. for others, it was validation. for others, it was certainty. and for the people I was most stuck on, it was reassurance that they were still the villain and I was still the good guy. but the more my nervous system kept looking to them to verify my safety, stability, or security, the more I kept going back. not necessarily in person. but in my thoughts. in my rumination. in my imaginary conversations. in the stories I replayed over and over again. because whenever dysregulation shows up, which is normal, my nervous system reached for what was familiar. and because I outsourced my sense of okayness to another person, I kept returning to them every time I felt unsettled. that’s why resentment feels so hard to let go of. that’s why no contact doesn’t always work. that’s why understanding them isn’t enough. the problem isn’t that they’re still in your life. the problem is that they’re still part of the way you regulate your nervous system. I didn't free myself by getting them to change or apologize or acknowledge anything I learned how to stay with my own racing heart, stomach drop, anger, grief, uncertainty, or discomfort without needing them to make it go away. because the moment I stopped needing something from them, they finally left my head. #nervoussystem #somatichealing #HealingJourney #whydoicare #cantletitgo
