Pieces of his neck were missing? Maybe the part containing his hyoid bone? That's very suspicious. The redness from the back of his nack could have been bruising and damage from him struggling while someone choked him. Just a theory based on this limited evidence.

I heard they kept his lungs also. The lungs would have determined if he was drowned- the neck would have determined if he had damaged- choked, broken, etc
