@the_inclusive_edit: What does an accessible bathroom look like for you? I chose this one because it worked beautifully for my needs. Accessible looks different for everyone. When I wrote ‘An Accessible Bathroom for Whom?’ That was exactly the point; that not every disabled guest needs the same roll-in shower, grab rails or transfer space. They don’t. An accessible bathroom may need to support stoma or catheter care. It may require discreet storage for medical supplies, an adult changing bench, a ceiling hoist, strong visual contrast, room for a personal assistant, or a bath that helps somebody manage pain. For another guest, it may simply need to be described clearly enough before arrival for them to know whether they can use it safely and privately. Since publishing the article, my inbox has filled with people sharing what that means in their own lives. The detail is valuable. But it needs to sit somewhere the hospitality and design industries can see it too. So, what does an accessible hotel bathroom look like for you? What would allow you, or the person you travel with, to manage personal care with safety, privacy, dignity and as much independence as possible? Let’s create a genuinely useful picture of what accessible bathrooms need to account for in practice. Not one supposedly perfect bathroom. A clearer understanding of the people who may need to use it. And perhaps we’ll see which hotel brands are ready to listen, learn and deliver.
