The Hanbalis do not differ from other jurists in the view that abortion is permissible as long as the fetus is in its early stages of formation, such as the nutfah or ‘alaqah stage. However, if it has developed into a formed embryo, meaning its shape and creation have become apparent, then it is not permissible to abort it, due to the possibility that the soul has already been breathed into it.
