@mattrosenman: This interaction was too funny because it comes up all the time. Take something obvious, like hot sauce being plant based, but call it out on the label anyway. Because health. Sean Evans said it best: ya gotta have an angle.
its to differentiate from sauces that contain fish sauce or oyster sauce ...

as a vegetarian i find that lots of sauces randomly have fish sauce or beef stock in them, so the plant-based label is actually nice to have. not necessarily even a health food thing

A hot sauce could have anchovies in it (like fish sauce or worcestershire sauce)

This is a pretty bad example because as he said, its eggplant parm flavor. Plant based is named because a major flavor component comes from dairy, ie animals.

plant is the base of the sauce... the rest is added to the base...

I once saw a plant based rice alternative. not a prepared dish. raw prepared packaged plant based rice alternative product.

Same thing with things that say organic vs the regular version. Only difference is the price.

The issue with “plant-based” is that it doesn’t necessary mean anything. As a vegan, sure it can be nice! But there aren’t requirements for it. I’ve seen “Plant-based” labeling yet contains egg?? It can be very very misleading.

It’s true. I can’t tell you how pissed my vegan friend was when he found out I put non-plant based hot sauce on their chicken wings.

A lot of hit sauces also add butter or honey which would also make it not vegan

Like it’s the right idea but this video isn’t what you think it is. Like this example is bad cause parm… one of the main ingredients is cheese, so a plant based one lets consumers know there is no cheese. And as others said many sauces have fish or beef in them.
