when my kids talk to me in a tone I don't like I say "let's try that again" and 9 times out of 10 they will change their approach. they are 2 and 4 and it's working pretty well

I grew up with authoritarian parents. Now, I'm more authoritative because I didn't want my future children to be scared to come home from school, dealing with an angry mother 24/7. "You have the right to be angry, you don't have the right to take it out on me." I've used that line before with students.

I’m a mix of the first and last, I grew up with the first and I’m cycle breaking so I’m trying to be the last one but that first slips out sometimes. Thankfully my kid knows if that first one slips out mommy needs a cool down break and she does too.

Idk what style “Dude stop being rude to me you’re not a rude kid. I get you’re annoyed but like… stop.” is but that’s mine lol I only ever get like number 1 is if she’s repeatedly acting a hot mess after I tell her to stop. We BOTH need time away from each other at that point 😅 then we hug it out after 15 mins and say “Tomorrow will be better!”

my dad is authoritarian to the point he would throw stuff at walls or punch holes to scare me and to get a reaction out of me so he can then degrade me and basically tell me how I'm spoiled, worthless, etc.

my parents, especially my dad, always did the first one. my mom would come into my room to talk to me and talk to me in a gentle voice that was meant to be reassuring but the words were literally blaming me for everything. now I have an unhealthy coping mechanism of anger to protect my mental state
