@pet.earthling: We judge reputation more than merit. Halo Effect & Horn Effect #psychology Monet example: https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/real-monet-ai-chaos
i think the root of disdain for AI art is less quality and more philosophy. AI can produce good quality images that are nearly indistinguishable from human work, but at what cost, and to what benefit? the social costs and the way that AI exploits the work of millions of actual artists and the effect it has on devaluing that profession is much more concerning to me than the quality of the work. and more philosophically, how much character and depth can an AI artwork contain? real human art tells you about the artist and their experience and perspective, AI art tells you nothing. i think this video comes off as flippant to those concerns

Very bad argument for AI. AI "art" *is* low quality. if you were to actually generate a Monet painting, it would be pretty obvious that it was AI, and anyone with passable art knowledge could pick it out. I'm not sure how lying to people and then using their response as a gotcha when NO AI is present is an endorsement of AI. You can claim they are bias against AI, but that fact is not related to the true quality of AI.

Watch the movie “exit through the gift shop” or look up a synopsis. It is a film by Banksy regarding the artworks and people’s expectations that mirrors the development of ai and came out long before ai ever did.

I think with the AI thing, being anti-AI appeals to snobs/pretentious types. Not saying all anti-AI people are inherently snobbish, but that people who are maybe drawn to being against AI in art bc it appeals to that sense of “better than thou”. Which explains the AI monet debacle. Just my speculation tho, not sure if this is what actually happened

Applied to everything. This is how we also judge people based on race.

I don't belive it. The first thing they would do is reverse image search the painting and figure out it was real.

There were several responses in that AI Monet experiment that were like "it honestly does look like the real thing, but knowing it's AI makes it impossible for me to appreciate it as a piece of art." So at least some people had a more realistic viewpoint of the situation

Why so negative? Yes human brains need shortcuts to make decisions. A lot of times, that’s fine. Sometimes it doesn’t work out. Beats starting from scratch for every tiny choice.

I remember when they did something similar with bottled water like with the wine. It was all the same water from the facet. Then you have restaurant food. Almost every restaurant has the same supplier.

I think a lot of older books have the same issue. Greatest Gatsby and Alice in Wonderland comes to mind as being basically unreadable, at least to me. I wanted to like them, but just couldn’t. I fully agree on biases as a whole. Sometimes I accept that price matters to me, sometimes packaging, and sometimes I have to go against those because some things are just better.

The context of the art is part of the art. It's why replicas of famous paintings sell for less than 1% of the price of the original
