Just saying- as a dv victim myself that had to flee across the nation from her abuser, I’m well versed in the process, court processes and worked as a victim advocate after it all. I am here if you need help, suggestions or want to help me figure out how to establish fair rights for victims. It’s wild how many resources are literally thrown at offenders to help them “rehabilitate “ yet victims have to beg and scrounge for any kind of help. We don’t get a free attorney to represent us during their criminal trial, or help us file anything pertaining to protection orders, custody or divorce as a result of dv unless you can find a program that has enough funding to do so. Most are already over capacity and non profits that rely on grants and donations, yet the offenders resources are funded by the government.
Did you know, that when an offender gets released after their sentence is completed, they are handed a set amount of money to help them reintegrate back into society? In Wa state it’s $300, plus a $100 transit voucher. If they are on probation/community custody after, they get free medical care, a phone paid for, travel stipends and/or bus passes, and housing vouchers. Did you also know, that while on probation, an offender can violate the stipulations of their probation an infinite amount of times and never get more than 15 days in jail per offense? They aren’t sent back to prison or charged with anything unless they get a new criminal charge. My experience, my abuser violated his probation 21 out of 36 months, violated our no contact order too many times to count and never got sent back to jail per his criminal conviction sentencing stipulations. The system is broken for victims and caters to abusers. We need to fight for change, new laws, offender registries nationwide and equal/better resources for victims as the abuser.
