No, he was aware because in the last manga he acknowledges that ash died because of the letter he sent, which was sent along with the plane ticket. He knew ashes guard was down, and probably figured that if that were the case then he was probably rushing to the airport

He actually did! In Garden of Light, we find out that Eiji is consumed by grief and guilt, guilt that maybe if he gave the letter personally to Ash, he wouldn't have died running just to catch him at the airport. He was grieving badly to the point that he refuses to go anyplace where he can see the nyc public library where Ash died in with his letter in his hand.
