the biggest issue and very few are talking about it kids will see this i heard about 50 shades in my school at 12 years old the 12 year olds were talking about how they watched it so were gonna show 13 14 15 year old girls getting raped is fine and saying no doesn't matter im sure some have read the book but movies are mainstream it'll go on Netflix or hbo or Amazon and they aren't age checking if a 10 year old clicked on a movie to watch and before everyone says parents should monitor what kids watch are yall telling me u never got away with watching the stuff you werent allowed to bc your parents are at work cook asleep and now they have phones with the apps its even easier

The only thing I disagree with you here is the weirdly antagonistic “ booktok we need to talk about haunting Adaline/dark romance ” ALOT of booktok is not supportive of the kind of book haunting Adaline is. The dark romance community also is not from what I’ve seen, very supportive either, the only people who are seem to be diehard haunting Adaline fans, and the same sort of flavor of people who already excuse terrible mmc’s.

The way she’s handling everything now compared to the way she did years ago while she was writing hollow. At a certain point she says “there’s layers to s*x and peeling that back in a healthy way is gratifying” and “if a girl says no and is in distress than that’s r*pe”. At a different point she says that she only reads romance but feels like she’s inadequate of writing healthy and true romance so she prefers to write action… but then goes on to write HA during the height of TikTok’s version of dark romance and then has the audacity to label that SA/r*pe slop as dark romance. This woman’s been in it for the money since day one. She wanted as much shock factor to sell. Eventually people stopped buying her books because of the anti semitism. She apologized for that but not for the racism. And cue to the present and she’s an obnoxious, smug snob. Who victim blames Adeline and says that Zade is like her son. Truly a really unhealthy individual

I'm probably going to get hate for this, but I genuinely don't think every dark romance needs to become a movie. Before anyone says, "It's fiction," I know. I'm a dark romance reader too. I fully believe adults can separate fantasy from reality, and I will always defend people's right to read whatever they enjoy. Reading dark fiction doesn't mean you support those actions in real life. But books and movies are not the same thing. When someone picks up a dark romance novel, they're making a conscious choice. They know the genre, they've likely read the trigger warnings, and they're choosing to step into that world. A movie doesn't work that way. It becomes mainstream. It gets clipped, edited, romanticized, and thrown all over social media where context disappears. My biggest concern isn't dark romance readers it's everyone outside the community. We already live in a world where misogynistic influencers, red-pill creators, and incel communities constantly misrepresent women and twist narratives to fit their beliefs. The last thing we need is people pointing at a movie like this and saying, "See? Women want to be stalked," or, "Women like men who ignore consent." That's not only dishonest it's dangerous. Fantasy is not consent. Fiction is not education. A woman reading a dark romance does not mean she wants that relationship in real life. Just like someone watching horror doesn't want to be hunted by a serial killer, or someone reading a crime novel doesn't want to be kidnapped. It's escapism, not a blueprint. I also want to acknowledge something important I've listened to survivors of sexual assault who have said dark romance helped them process trauma and regain a sense of control. Their experiences are valid. I've also heard survivors say these books were deeply triggering and harmful for them. Their experiences are equally valid. Healing isn't one-size-fits-all, and we shouldn't dismiss either perspective. This isn't me saying the books should be banned. It isn't me judging anyone who loves them. Read whatever you want you're an adult. I'm simply saying that not every story translates responsibly to the screen.

What concerns me is also the shift in dark romance as a genre. It was, mainly, a ‘I’ll burn the world down to protect you’ genre. Yes, it still had some very unhealthy behaviours, mainly controlling and obsessive tendencies. However the romance and sexual content was consensual. Now it seems to have shifted partly into a full glorification of abuse. And that has been pushed more and more main stream. Haunting Adeline is a violent horror story.

Thank you for actually bringing research to the conversation. I’ve been sitting back and listening to the two sides of this argument but noticed a lot of people are stating things as facts that are really opinions. It just ends up in a circular argument with two sides loudly making claims without backing. So it’s great to see someone actually bringing something more objective into the conversation. Any chance you could drop a list of the sources you cited? And if there’s any other recommended reading that you feel is relevant? Thanks for taking the time to make such an informative video.

As someone who was introduced to Dark Romance and SMUT at a young age after and during going through a lot of sec-trauma once I got into an age of having a significant other my expectations where all over the place and made me romanticize a lot of things UNTIL a couple years ago did I start therapy and realized non of that stuff is actually good for women of Young women. There’s more and more Y.A. Books that have a lot of sec and it’s not even healthy relationships and set expectations too drastic for what actually happens in reality.

this has nothing to do with this video, i just have to say how happy and grateful i am to find your channel. your content is educational, not based in emotion or past experience which i see so much online which does have its place. but i feel like so many more victims in dv relationships need content like this. with facts/stats about dv and analysis of the misogyny that shows up in our relationship culture. watching your content as someone living with abuse makes me emotional. i appreciate the work you do so much. i hope one day i break free and can get more education and am able to advocate for and educate especially young people (as my relationship started in high school). thank you so so much.
