(omg pls don't let this flop!!!) I want to start by saying I went into this movie completely blind. I am really glad I did because I ended up loving it. Joe and Stacy had fantastic chemistry! As a horror fan, one of my favorite things about the genre is how it uses monsters and supernatural elements to talk about real issues. Leviticus pulls that off beautifully. I also think the title is perfect; it gives us a biblical allusion before the film even begins. So, we already know this will be about a conversation on religion, sexuality, and who gets to decide what is considered “wrong.” CONVERSION THERAPY IS BAD…. Now that that's out of the way, the cinematography was one of my favorite parts. The shot composition is really cool. Sometimes the town feels endless, making the boys seem small against it. Other times, everything closes in around them. Anyway, watching Hunter, Nail, and Ryan try to navigate their feelings while living in a community that treats those feelings like a disease was just really sad. As the movie goes on, the entity starts feeling less like a monster and more like everything these boys have been taught to fear about themselves. I love how the film handled physical affection between the boys. A lot of teenage boys hide affection behind physicality, and the movie understands that. So, we see the roughhousing, wrestling, and shoving each other around, all of those little moments create the perfect opening for the entity to come in. WITH THAT BEING SAID, *spoiler* one detail I kept coming back to was Hunter and Ryan literally throwing rocks at each other. Now I might be reaching but with the movie being called Leviticus, it felt like a reference to biblical stoning. Whether the filmmakers intended it or not, the symbolism fits perfectly within a story about boys growing up under a version of Christianity that treats them as something that needs to be fixed. What makes it even more interesting is that Ryan only really engages in that behavior with Hunter. There is fear and confusion in his relationship with Naim, but there is also honesty. He attempts that same aggression once with Naim and never follows through again. To me, that speaks to the difference between the feelings Ryan is still trying to suppress and the feelings he is slowly beginning to accept. The ending really got to me. My initial reaction was honestly annoyance because it felt so abrupt. Then I sat with it for a while. The more I thought about it, the more I realized the ending is exactly what the movie needed. This was never a story about defeating a monster. It was about letting go of the things that gave the entity power in the first place. There’s no big scene where everyone learns a lesson. There’s no apology tour. Nobody suddenly becomes accepting. Instead, Naim and Ryan leave. They leave behind the church, the expectations placed on them, and the people who convinced them they needed to be fixed. . . . . . #leviticus #movietok #filmtok #moviereview #edit
