This is a concerning post which merely calls for something to be "unlearned", which makes many points that are oftentimes wrong or far more nuanced. It makes no consideration of the form of zapper being used (handheld, automated, what UV range it uses) or its location, which are crucial for ecological concerns. I also get the sense that this person views house flies, a vector for infection on food, and a highly irritating animal, as a good animal...
This guy is also misrepresenting the study, which never made any claims that letting bugs be present near humans was safer than zapping them. Him showing a screenshot of a paper he hasn't understood doesn't mean he is right.
It instead said they "could" play a role in the spread of infectious diseases. We know for a fact flies eating food *does* play this role. The paper merely calls for extra vigilance, and this is most likely necessary with large non-supervised setups, not the ones humans use. For example, in commercial food kitchens, zappers shouldn't be placed overhead preparation areas and different systems should be used.
Actually reading the study, one sees that with the usual concentrations / loads of virus on the surface of a fly or in its internal, using the rate of release (e.g. 1 in 1,000,000 for the fed flies), spraying a high infected fly releases at most ~5 virions. There is a fraction of a percentage chance even one virion enters a human's respiratory tract from this (for all viruses this means infection is extremely unlikely). For viruses flies are vectors for, they are often either enteric or have very high minimum infectious doses.
Flies eat food by secreting infected saliva onto it. Basic anatomical calculation shows this can deposit thousands of virions, especially concerning for enteric viruses which flies can be vectors for.
The information this guy is spreading could be doing active harm. There is zero numeracy involved (e.g. being able to compare virion counts) and no consideration of what viruses flies are vectors for. I don't claim to have perfect knowledge, but at least I can tell his reasoning is wrong.
