@oddsontechnology: Follow us @oddsontechnology_ for more tech archives and tech videos. Linus Torvalds did not hold back when asked about Java. During an interview about the Google vs. Oracle lawsuit, the creator of Linux admitted he didn’t know every legal detail—but that didn’t stop him from sharing his opinion on Java. Calling it “a horrible language” with “a horrible VM,” he made it clear he’d rather see the entire dispute disappear than spend another minute talking about it. Whether you agree with him or not, this is classic Linus Torvalds. He’s built a reputation for brutally honest takes on programming languages, software engineering, open source, and the tech industry as a whole. It’s one of the reasons he’s remained one of the most respected—and outspoken—figures in computer science and modern software development. #Code #Linux #Java #Oracle #Google
modern Java is great but I love all the junior vibe coders hating on a tool like it's a sports team. an algo I wrote in java let me retire at 35

gotta be real, about 90% of the time I see some "slow java code" it's immediately an "I have performed thousands of separate database queries for this task so far" situation. languages have their characteristics, but people are extremely quick to blame languages and frameworks and very slow to inspect their own code for flaws. everyone's better off if we assume our own code is the problem until proven otherwise.

I mean, the niche for Java is reliable, maintainable server backends for long-running web apps. In this niche, it is doing exceptionally well. Prominent example is the Netflix backend, which is completely Java-based. It is also pretty fast, and much faster than other backend languages such as Python, TypeScript or Ruby. The only other backend-focused language that can keep up with it in terms of performance is Go. Of course you would not use Java for building an OS. But it always will be my first choice for building backends for web apps. Probably will get some hate from junior devs for this, but junior devs also think MongoDB was a good database.

Every time this man speaks, he says something I happen to strongly agree with. He never misses the target. GOAT.

He is right. Java had its day but with containers you can use anything you want and get native speed without a dumb VM.

For high-performance realtime systems it can be impossible to work with due to GC, but when it appeared in the 90s it found a niche as a memory-safe server software and the years have proven it right. Nowadays there are more alternatives though.

What I love is that he thinks java is shit but at the same time doesn’t walk around and tells everyone to stop using java.
