evil to laugh at this behavior. the reason this happens to cats is because modern carpets are made with a new material thats comprised of three different fabrics woven together in a flexible cross pattern that can compress tightly on smaller paws. this creates a sensation in their paws that travels up to their legs and tenses the leg muscles to feel like they are being pulled much like how I'm pulling your leg right now
