Who said you have to have snow to have a winter wonderland? 🌫️⛰️🌲🦌 When to see moody winter scenes in the Smokies… 🌲Honestly, always. The scenery’s always changing, even on a cloudy day. 🌲Sunrise and sunset (they occur earlier and later, respectively, than your weather apps tell you if you’re at higher elevations; they occur later and earlier, respectively, if you’re in a valley). 🌲After / while it rains (the creeks normally swell… but please be safe, especially during high winds: trees go down frequently, and sometimes there are rock slides). 🌲During/after snow (again, please use caution). Just check to see which roads are closed on the national park’s road info Twitter @ SmokiesRoadsNPS. 🌲When the sun keeps disappearing and reappearing behind clouds (these make for great timelapse videos and even photo shoots). 📷 Remember— you can always check the Great Smoky Mountains National Park webcams at NPS.gov. They typically update every 15 minutes to show weather conditions. 👌🏼 ⛅️ And last but not least… Where to see ELK HERDS in the Smokies… 🦌 Cataloochee, North Carolina. This is where the @nationalparkservice rereleased the park’s current elk population in 2001. The road there can be bumpy and difficult depending on the weather, so again, check the Twitter page (listed above) for road conditions. 🦌 The fields off Highway 441 near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. 🦌 Cherokee, North Carolina. During feeding times (an hour or two post-dawn and pre-dusk), I’ve seen entire herds walking through the middle of town! 🤯 🦌 During summer, I’ve seen elk travel as far up the mountains as the Oconaluftee Valley Overlook on Highway 441, near Newfound Gap! Drive with caution 😅 Don’t forget to save this video for whenever you need some good mountain vibes! What other Smokies content would you like to see? Let me know! #greatsmokymountains #foggydays #elk #elkspotting #naturelovers #travelgram #oconaluftee #tennesseevacation #scenicviews #exploreoutdoors #explore #nature
