@jagannathanneurosurgery: My respond to Nick Baumel’s post. First and foremost, online bullying is not ok. I have seen this first hand, having my staff bullied for their weight and other physical traits. Second, however, professionalism matters. As physicians, we have a duty to relate to and welcome a diverse patient population. Just because a certain type of language is appropriate in your own community does not make it appropriate to broadcast to your patient population. To be clear, I support Nick’s second chance and firmly believe he deserved it. But I also wonder if he had come from another school, or another country, if he would have enjoyed the privilege of that second chance. #healthcare #medicine #medlife

Let’s stop holding ONLY doctors especially trainees to “professionalism” while other healthcare works can get away with everything, look at nursejohn videos

If you watch his latest video, it’s very clear he learned nothing from this experience.

I’m just confused on what his sexual orientation has to do with anything? I’m aware that people used that when he was receiving hate but other than that?

I don’t condone bullying or personal attacks BUT I stand by the fact that some of his posts are extremely unprofessional. Does that warrant hate? No. Are people allowed to criticize "jokes" they find tasteless or inappropriate? Absolutely.

As a gay medical student, I understand making those jokes in private setting with friends who you know would be comfortable, but never to a patient or a platform that is suppose to represent my medical career. something that is constantly highlighted in my med school is professionalism, as you said. being part of the LGBTQ+ community does not warrant a free pass to offend any other marginalized group, his video didn’t even have an apology. the online bullying and what lead to it was unacceptable, but he still offended many people. he can at least say sorry, but still address the bullying. his video he made was a clear case of deflection as a coping mechanism, instead of taking accountability.

I am sorry he attempted to take his life, but the video he made mostly focused on the community he belongs to in his personal life. When you get on a public platform in scrubs you are presenting yourself as a health care professional first. So the public is going to hold you to the standard of a healthcare professional. As a healthcare professional it is priority to make all groups feel safe within your care. That video did not do that. He also touched very little on the community he offended.

He wasn’t mocking the female anatomy though. He just used a song to refer to the female anatomy and what he was referencing was how doctors have MyChart and do virtual consultations. It’s not that serious.

Has anyone even watched the video or, better yet, read the caption underneath the video? He put in the video's caption that he was the designated medical friend. He never said in any of his videos that he didn’t care if someone was SA’d. Also, he is not using his sexuality as an excuse for the video; he mentioned in one of his most recent videos that the usual viewers of his posts are part of the lgbtq community and people who have the same humor as him. Everyone who is genuinely hating on this man is blowing this way out of proportion. Everyone is basing their opinions on videos that other people have made; no one has actually taken the time to watch the video and read the caption.

Based on his response, it seems as if, unfortunately, there was little to no disciplinary action from Mayo. The ability to reflect on the impact of one’s actions vs our intention is a key skill as a medical professional must learn. Him not even remotely acknowledging that his video could have landed as harmful and using the lgbt community to deflect is even more problematic than the video that triggered the situation. But nobody is ready for THAT conversation.

The craziest part of all of this is that he has still yet to take any accountability whatsoever and still has the extremely problematic videos posted front and center on his page. I’m also glad that he got a second chance, but he has some serious maturing left to do.

It's more than professionalism. I guarantee some women out there will decide to not go see a doctor for fear of being mocked for the way their vaginas look. Just like women have died bc they were obese & feared a doctor's attitude. (You CAN address an issue without judgment & scorn.) His attitude can KILL!

His first video back should've been and apology and to show what he has been doing to take accountability of the posts he made and how he's learning from it.
