when I was a child, I bored and started digging holes in the backyard. I do not know why and it is not the point. I accidentally hit a lizard with the shovel head and its tail popped off. It was writhing about and I immediately felt horrible. As a tiny empath, I knew it was suffering and would die - for how could any creature survive having 1/3 of its body severed?? So, I compassionatetly put it out of its misery. I made a little coffin, held a burial ceremony, and mourned. I was too ashamed to tell anyone... BUT then, maybe a month later, we learned in school that those lizards will just pop their tails off as a defensive mechanism and they're totally fine. I had a series of panicked follow-up questions that my teacher was not interested in entertaining. It turns out, what I did was not the compassionate act of euthanasia I thought it was... instead, I was a just a murderer. Ive checked, and the statute of limitations is finally up for my grievous crime - so this felt like the appropriate time to confess.
