@leave_then_cleave: Therapists are destroying families. At least… that’s what some headlines and commentators would have you believe. This week, family estrangement is back in the news. Aaron Rodgers has reportedly reconciled with members of his family (which I genuinely celebrate), while others are arguing that therapists are responsible for the rise in adult children going no contact. But I think we’re asking the wrong question. Instead of asking… “Who’s convincing people to leave?” Maybe we should be asking… “Why are so many people willing to lose everything they love?” Because nobody chooses to lose their parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, family traditions, and holidays lightly. In this first episode of Cleave Answers, I unpack why I believe this conversation deserves more nuance than sound bites and headlines. We’ll talk about therapy, accountability, reconciliation, faith, and the questions I think every parent and adult child should be willing to ask. My goal isn’t to take sides. My goal is to help families heal. 🎥 I’d genuinely love to hear from both perspectives: Parents: What do you wish your adult children understood? Adult children: What do you wish your parents understood? Let’s keep this conversation respectful. There are real families—and real pain—on both sides. If this conversation resonates with you, I’d love for you to subscribe. Every week on Cleave Answers, we’ll tackle the biggest conversations surrounding family relationships, boundaries, reconciliation, and faith. 📚 If you’re wrestling with the question of whether you can love someone deeply and have healthy boundaries, my book Christlike Boundaries is linked below. #Famil#FamilyEstrangementd#Boundariesa#TherapyalHealth

my parents can blame me. my therapist tried to talk me out of NC. I presented evidence and witnesses to the abuse, and he was then convinced it was the right choice.

I was put off by the way Fox presented this. I emailed them and gave a small glimpse why I had to make the decision I made. It’s not always something that we want, but need to do. As a Christian I struggle greatly with this, but I know, my first priority is to my family (husband and sons), my extended family being toxic, was creeping into my family and I had to make it stop.

only the parents who can't take accountability will believe therapists are the reason for AC going NC

My dad/ step mom has hurt me so bad. So much throughout my childhood. I have other siblings who gone no contact with him. I called my dad after 12 years and said I forgive him and I want to move on from the anger I have towards him. He said thank you but that he doesn’t feel the need to apologize to me. He doesn’t put an effort so I don’t either

It is his story. It’s his family story. Each family is different. We should celebrate reconciliation and we should celebrate those that. Choose not reconciling due to their own personal reasons. Support is the keyword for me.

There’s more than one problem in the therapy world. Clients who aren’t honest and don’t really want to get to the bottom of the issue, therapists who aren’t honest with their clients to avoid getting fired or let go by their client- both of which I’ve noticed. I’ve experienced this recently with my twin sister. We’ve been no contact for over 1.5yrs and she’s recently tried to reach out but refuses to have an honest conversation and wants to sweep everything under the rug…mind you, she’s the one who went no contact and said her therapist told her my family was toxic and she needed to cut us off. Instead of doing any work she used therapy as a weapon, did absolutely no work on herself and blamed everyone else. At first I was hurt incredibly bad bc we were going through the worst time of my family’s life and needed her but I see it as a good thing now bc that distance is what I needed to see the horrendous way she treated myself, my husband and kids. I was open to starting the relationship back up but after her texts showed no accountability or wanting to have an honest conversation I knew things would be no different and it’s the negative influence on my kids that I can’t allow.

When professional codes of ethics were written, they did not contemplate the scale, reach, and psychological influence of modern social media platforms. Today, licensed therapists can broadcast clinical style commentary to hundreds of thousands of viewers without assessment, consent, context, or accountability safeguards. Although this is not a formal therapist client relationship, the communication dynamic can closely resemble one. Some therapists structure their content as though they are speaking directly to a specific individual using clinical language, diagnostic framing, or polarized narratives such as victim versus villain. When a licensed professional speaks into a camera in a way that implies insight into the unseen viewer’s personal situation, it can create a false sense of being evaluated, diagnosed, or morally judged. This dynamic carries real risk. Viewers may internalize generalized or speculative commentary as personalized clinical guidance. Others may experience shame, stigma, or psychological distress from being implicitly cast into oversimplified roles. Without guardrails, this blurred boundary between education and clinical authority can undermine public trust and cause preventable harm.

That's never gonna happen in toxic family dynamics. The reason being is the abusive people actually believe they're the victims. Therefore, you have to treat them like pet snakes: you can care if you have the GRACE to do it, which I do, but I treat them like snakes. They can and will BITE you if given the chance.

Therapists indeed are dividing families. They make their client believe their problems stem only from their parents. The new federation wants to be a victim of something. They want a title. It’s odd. I’ve had several friends whose children have stepped away. They quote therapy terminology in their exit. But if you dive deep and look at the bigger picture most, no all, theorist need help themselves. They’ve been indoctrinated in college and their treatment is adding to the mental crises not improving it. More people nowadays see a therapist than ever before and more people are unwell than they’ve ever been. So is therapy working? If it were, they would be moving on after so many visits. Seeing a therapist for a lifetime isn’t treatment. A good therapist will give you the skills you need to cope on your own so you don’t rely on them. That’s true treatment!
