Yeah. Air Force vet here. I was an air traffic controller so that was one of the whitest career fields in the AF. I experienced so much racism. I didn't let them get to me...still doing air traffic today as a civilian.

As a white Veteran he isn't lying. People were comfortable being their true selves around me thinking I was one of them. Its crazy the amount of times I had to speak up and stop a higher ranking person from saying racist slurs.

And this is basically the corporate world I experienced. A lot of my white millionaire friends loved me—wink, wink—but sometimes it felt like there was an unwritten price of admission: laugh along with the Black jokes, be the cool Black guy in the room, and maybe they'll let you into the millionaire club too. Problem was, I could never play that role for long. Eventually I'd snap back. They'd hit me with some racist joke and everybody would be laughing. Then I'd fire one right back at them and suddenly the room got quiet. Now it's, “Damn, dude, he's crazy. Maybe we shouldn't have him around.” Hold on—you wanted equality, right? You can make me the punchline all night, but when I start writing jokes, suddenly HR needs a meeting? Lmfao. That's probably why I never completely excelled in those circles. I could've laughed my way to another million, but apparently my mouth kept declining the promotion.

The comment section is a microcosm of the US. You have this soldier tell an experience. You have other soldiers recanting similar experiences. You have white soldiers saying yeah this happened because they were comfortable saying those things in front of me. You have historical references of the behavior being discussed and overwhelming strangers who have never experienced being a black service member run full speed to the comments to either invalidate him or call him a liar. The worst ones who wait until something racist happens and gets discussed to say the one thing you can say when you can’t logically retort what’s being said. “ you’re playing the race card “ 🤦🏾♂️

Yet again. When joining the military the realest convo I had was a white telling me to protect myself from racism from white people and Latinos as a black man. He said don’t go anywhere alone with untrusted people.
