Sailor Moon and Jem and the Holograms are the only animated shows I can think of where they put this much effort into what the characters are wearing. Mind you the latter cartoon was created to sell dolls so it's extra awesome Sailor Moon did this.

Anime is only popular in the west because of sailor moon. It was the first anime cartoon network bought the rights to. It made enough money in 1 year, ‘96, that CN bought Dragonball Z in ‘97 and “that,” as ‘they’ say, “is that.”

The mangaka was rich before she started the manga. Her nickname was 'Hime' or princess. Princess Serenity's dress was couture at it's finest. The everyday outfits she put the girls in was peak fashion for the time. We respect and love Takeuchi Naoko and her love of fashion.

Takeuchi Naoko, the creator of the manga, grew up in a wealthy family (I believe her father was in the high-end jewelry trade). She's also always had an interest in fashion; she even made Haruka and Michiru gay in part because she saw a couple shot in a fashion magazine and thought their style would look good on a lesbian couple.

There's so much fashion! The Kings of Heaven are wearing 1986 Mugler, Pluto's purple suit is 1992 ready to wear Chanel, Mistress 9 is wearing Versace, we also see the Scouts wearing Versace Medusa strap dresses for their princess looks in the manga and that just scratches the surface! Also fun fact Saturn is the only non villain seen wearing Mugler when she's in a more antagonist role!
