they were each other’s character development. Chuck & Serena offered no character development, they wanted the idea of the other person regardless of how toxic they were. Blair being forced to grow and get over her prejudice and classism and being more accepting of Dan; Dan finally getting that acceptance, and actually doing something about his dreams by turning gossip girl into a book — which was about Blair.
